What to ExPect

Understanding the ExP Journey:

Our work is based on the idea that the human brain works to ensure survival and yet each brain is unique in how it does this. When we feel defensive or unsafe, no new pathways are available to promote change – we are too busy protecting ourselves. Therefore, utilizing a trauma-informed care model, the first element in our therapy is creating safety. Only then will we be able to develop practical tools that make sense to you and your experience.

All this is done through trauma-informed techniques leveraging the latest research in autism and neurobiology that benefit the psychological well-being of yourself and everyone in your family system. When you work with me, we create an environment where you can feel safe and valued where you are in life right now. When this happens – the opportunity to take your place and power in life can emerge in wonderful ways.

What does A neurodivergent affirming Approach mean?

Celebrating who you are and where you are at so we can create a pool of resources for you to enjoy and feel good about. Working to expand your vocabulary for explaining your needs and feelings, relating to experiences with others, in a way that allows you to be heard and validated. Creating the opportunity to feel empowered and good about yourself and your future for who you are.

Pathological demand avoidance (PDA)

PDA is a sub-type of autism characterized by an extreme avoidance of everyday demands and is an anxiety-driven need to be in control.  With an understanding of the anxiety involved, individuals with PDA believe a better description would be a pervasive drive for autonomy.

The power of words:

At ExPTherapy we try to stay attuned to the greater community at large which includes ensuring we stay current and sensitive to preferred language and pronouns. Preferences are not the same for every individual, and we try to be cognizant of this, as part of the ethos of this practice. I work to meet everyone where they are in their journey and what they are comfortable with. Please, always feel free to discuss what language works best for you in your experience.
